The moment you realized you had lice becomes a vivid memory. It’s one of those moments you can never forget. It will forever be burned in my memory like a hot poker on a cow’s behind.

My daughter had started Kindergarten. She had long hair that was usually worn down. With fine, clean hair she was a huge bullseye for lice. And the start of school each year is prime time for lice to spread.

I remember my head getting so ichy one night that I couldn’t sleep. Nighttime is when they are most active. I was tossing and turning because of my itchy head!! My husband snored by my side. I knew something was wrong and it was up to me to figure it out.

Into the bathroom with a mirror and a mission. Bound and determined to figure out what was going on.

And then it happened. I saw a live lice crawling on my scalp! My stomach turned into knots! A lice on MY HEAD!!! My mind raced… my daughter must have them too. I checked her head. Of course I found lice on her head too.

Update: We have had round 2 of headlice in our house. My 11 year old daughter came home with them. I immediately recognized the symptoms and treated her immediately. And I’m thankful to report no one else in our home got them (although I did treat everyone’s head).

So I gave my sleeping husband a quick shake – told him I was headed to the store to get something to kill the lice. In a haze, he muttered something resembling acknowledgment and went back to sleep.

Off to the grocery store – by this time it’s midnight. I’m in my pajamas. The store is like a ghost town. I find the lice treatment section. Bottom shelf and there were so many options.

I plopped down on the grocery store floor in exhaustion – looking at all the options. Hot tears streaming down my face. It was a sight.

I felt desperate. I would do anything to get rid of the lice! Even thought about shaving my head instead of using all the chemicals for a hot minute. Then quickly came to my senses that that was crazy talk.

The main ingredient in most lice treatments is permethrin, a known pesticide! So effectively you’re putting a pesticide on your child’s head and letting it sit on there. As much as I desperately wanted to get rid of the lice, I just wasn’t okay putting a pesticide on my kids head.

So I started looking at some different options.

I knew there had to be a safer option out there. So many options out there – mayo and vinegar. I just wasn’t sure and I didn’t want to take chances of it not working. While I love home remedies – I literally might lose my mind if these lice were not gone fast.

And the thought of getting my little kids to keep mayo on their head overnight wasn’t reasonable.

Then I looked up the reviews for a product I’d bought in my lice treatment buying binge. Lice MD had rave reviews and it was safe to use on my kids. No burning, no pesticides. It works by smothering the lice with silicone.

The main ingredient in Lice MD is silicone like they use in your conditioner. The official name is dimethicone and the EWG gives it a safety score of 3. Not perfect, but much better than permethrin.

So I lathered my hair up with Lice MD in the middle of the night. Let it sit for 10 minutes and combed through my hair as best as I could. Not like I would be able to sleep anyway!

That night I FINALLY went to bed without an itching head. And confident in my plan to get rid of the lice for good in all my kids. Feeling satisfied that I might have found the best lice treatment for kids without pesticides.

Treat Everyone in the Home for Lice

Everyone in your home should be treated for lice. If the men in your home have short hair, they might be able to skip treatment. My husband has really short hair and was the only one who went without getting lice.

Lice can be sneaky little suckers. So you’ll need to give your house a good clean. Vacuuming every few days is important. A huge pain in the butt but worthwhile.

Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water and dry on dry on high heat for at least 20 minutes.
